As we grow to adulthood, our parents continue growing old and therefore, we have to take care of them. For most people, this can be a difficult transition because they are always used to having their parents look after them. As such, it becomes difficult to adjust to the reversed roles as well as the physical and psychological changes that characterize people in their old age. However, there is no need to run away from these problems, all we need to do is understand these changes and establish ways of helping our parents.
The first thing that we need to do is understand the problems that our parents’ undergo. After retirement, they are no longer financially independent and may lose purpose in life. Others may feel that they are no longer important in the family. Additionally, most of them suffer from deteriorating health and can even lose mobility. Moreover, our elderly parents have specific expectations of how they expect to be treated in their old age; they desire to be valued and to be recognized as important advisors. However, the schedule and the responsibilities of their children may not allow them to dedicate most of their time to meeting these expectations.
Though differences may arise between children and their aging parents, it is necessary for the former to treat the latter with affection, patience and respect. Such treatments can prevent problems such as feelings of isolation and loneliness. Some children are known for treating their parents wrongly just because they are more healthy and capable. It is necessary to be sensitive to their needs and opinions. Also, don’t always tell them what to do even if you disagree with some of their decisions.
The moment we understand the physical and mental needs that characterize old age, we will be able to take better care of our aging parents.
