BACH Vs HANDEL

I have chosen Handel for, perhaps a slightly different reason to many. I have spent many years teaching Turkish boys and girls, previously starved of music, to sing. As is so often the case, in countries where music, art and drama are regarded as unnecessary luxuries, and where "imagination" is frowned upon, there is amazing, untapped talent and an unconscious need to express it. Of all the composers whose works we have sung - Handel has been the composer with whom the Young Turks have felt most at home. Perhaps one of the most moving moments of my life was the occasion when, as I clambered down the main school staircase at the end of a day, a voice soared up the stairwell from the ground floor. A young Turkish-Jewish boy was packing his sports clothes into his bag and singing, "I Know that My Redeemer Livethn". Turkey is a 99% Muslim country, and from time to time there have been complaints from the more conservative staff members and families - "But this is Christian music!" The attitude of all the young singers when asked if there was a problem for them in this area, has always been, "Oh come on teacher! It's not about all that! It's about the music!"
